The 1980s is the period of various watch developments either mechanical or quartz. But this is also the period of Gerd R. Lang who founded his company called Chronoswiss. He began designing watches for serious and knowledgeable people. Lang realized the fact that the watch market was inundated by various quartz watches but at the same time he knew that this was not the end of mechanical ones it was just the time when mechanical watches became less popular for the masses. And it was a new era for the innovations in the field of mechanical timepieces, the era of prestigious and complicated watches.
As a child, Lang had a strong passion for mechanical things. When he began the career of a watchmaker he became obsessed with precise time tracking. 1983 is the year of the Chronoswiss foundation. The company was created in Munich, Germany and it was the starting point for Lang in the quest of designing marvelous mechanic timepieces. He started acquiring limited-edition and out-of-use movements. These movements were embellished and improved by him. Thus the watches made by Lang were immediately recognized thanks to their elegance and technical valor.
Chronoswiss surprised everyone when it unveiled its marvelous regulator wristwatch in 1988. This watch carried the oversized regulator dial. The manufacturing of its own models began in 1990 and a huge success the company gained two years after, when it presented to the public its Rattrapante β a two-handed patented watch.
Since the beginning of 1990s the company began unveiling its creations regularly and finally gained the fame of an international brand. The most remarkable timepieces made by Chronoswiss include: the 1993 the patented, reversible Cabrio watch, the 1994 patented Grand Regulateur and in 1995 was the debut of the Opus automatic skeletonized chronograph. A year after, an impact on the mechanical watch market was made by the company's watch with a unique system of analog, digital and retrograde time-displays under the name of Delphis.
The two main debuts of Chronoswiss were in 1998, when the company introduced Pantos β the first skeletonized self-winding fly-back chronograph, and in 2001 β the year of Tourbillion Regulator a watch that represented the mix of beauty and a technically advanced movement. These two debuts received at least one international award.
With a belief that its watches should be exclusive the company releases only 7000 watches a year for global distribution. The watches of Chronoswiss are designed in Switzerland. They are hand finished to the exact specifications stated by Lang.
Every year Lang upgrades his creations with new features and complexities. Thus his Chronoscope represents his recent creation. It is a chronograph with regulator dial. In order to mount the switching mechanism situated at the front, the company reworked the plate of the movement. Thus the functions of the chronograph, start, stop and finish are triggered via a pushpiece. The latter is integrated into the winding crown.
Today Chronoswiss has a whole collection that includes the classically-styled watches such as: chronographs, chronometers, sport watches and even a watch with reverse rectangular shape.
Although itβs a German company and the assembling takes place also there, all of its movements are Swiss.
