Antiquorum to Bid High-Priced Patek PhilippeFri, 16 March 2007 Rare high-priced Patek Philippe watches will be among about 300 other timekeeping creations to be sold at the following Antiquorum auction sale. The event will be organized on March 28 at new headquarters of the auction house located on Madison Avenue, New York City. The Antiquorum's Collectors' Wristwatches, Pocket Watches and Clocks sale will take place after viewings in Beverly Hills, Calif., New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
Three exclusive Patek Philippe watches will be auctioned - Patek Philippe Ref. 5029, Ref. 5013, and Ref. 2499. All three timepieces are estimated to reach the amazing price range of about $ 400,000-$ 500,000.
The first highlight of the auction sale will become a Patek Philippe Ref. 5029. The watch is housed in rose gold case and equipped with a self-winding movement. It provides the complication of a minute-repeater. The watch was created as a part of a Patek Philippe limited edition of just ten pieces presented in 1997. The edition marked a memorable occasion in the brand's history - the opening of the Patek Philippe Geneva factory.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5013 is also an extremely rare timekeeping device powered by a self-winding movement. Its platinum case is tonneau-shaped. The watch offers a variety of functions - retrograde perpetual calendar, 48-hour power reserve, minute-repeater and moon phase indicator.
Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 will no doubt get in the center of the Antiquorum bidders' attention. The astronomic watch is presented in 18K yellow gold case. Among the functions provided by the timepiece there is a perpetual calendar, a round-button chronograph, a 30-minute register, and moon phase indicator.
The three above mentioned Patek Philippe watches are not the only valuable pieces developed by the company. Twenty most costly wristwatches sold at auction all belong to the Patek Philippe Company. Moreover, it is a Patek Philippe timepiece that holds the record for becoming the most complicated watch ever developed and most expensive watch ever sold. In December 1999 the brand's creation was hammered down for $ 11 million at Sotheby's auction house.
It was the Henry Graves super-complicated pocket watch developed back in 1933. The story of the most expensive timepiece ever sold is really amazing. The gold pocket watch offering 24 watchmaking complications appeared as the result of a continuous competition between Henry Graves Jr. , a financier from New York and James Ward Packard, a car engineer from Ohio. Both gentlemen dreamed of owning a watch with the greatest number of complicated functions. Packard commissioned the company to produce 13 complicated watches in the period of 1900 - 1927.
In his turn, Henry Graves Jr. asked the company to develop for him a series of complicated timepieces. The Patek Philippe watchmakers required 3 years to design and 5 years to produce the most complicated watch in the horology history. After the financier's death, the timepiece was sold to the Time Museum in Rockford in 1968 and then, 31 years later, was auctioned at Sotheby's. Its pre-sale price was in the range of $ 3-5 million. But the new owner of the complicated creation, an anonymous collector, acquired it for over $ 11 million.

Cronoswiss - Grand Regulateur ChronometreFri, 09 February 2007
The BaselWorld 2006 witnessed the introduction of a new Cronoswiss timepiece - the Grand Regulateur Chronometre.
The story of the timepiece started back in 1994. Then, the creation of the brand paid tribute to the past era of pocket watches worn by our ancestors on the chain. The Grand Regulateur appeared in a limited edition of 300 pieces. In fact, the timepiece could be worn on a wrist as it was provided with one more case and a bayonet connector. It was powered by the hand-wound caliber C.1722 R produced by the Minerva movement manufacturer.
Grand Regulateur Chronometre launched in 2006 continues the tradition of hand-wound timepieces that started from developing the Regulateur introduced in 1987. Cronoswiss watchmakers decided to revive the Grand Regulateur as the new era in watchmaking implies new horological standards, and especially in relation to the case size.
Gerd-Rudiger Lang established the tradition of developing aesthetically appealing timepieces. The Regulateur Automatic equipped with the automatic caliber C. 122 implied the case size limitation. If the brand's watchmakers enlarged the case's diameter, it would lead to considerable empty space left inside the case. Moreover, the case's growth would influence negatively the beauty of the watch's dial - the hour- and seconds-scale would be shifted to the center. Having considered everything mentioned above, the Cronoswiss watchmakers made their mind to develop novel Grand Regulateur Chronometre.
The new Grand Regulateur Chronometre has been created in the distinctive style of the brand. It is housed inside an impressively over-sized case measuring 44 millimeters in diameter. The heart of the timepiece is the hand-wound movement C.673. It is noteworthy that the base of the movement is ETA. In addition to that, the movement of every Grand Regulateur Chronometre timepiece is subjected to the most rigorous tests to receive the prestigious COSC - the official Swiss Chronometer Control - that guarantees supreme and long-lasting accuracy of the movement. The movement is provided with Incabloc shock absorber. It comprises swan-neck precision regulator and Glycydur-balance. The pallet, pallet-wheel and screws are thoroughly polished, while the plate is circular grained , and the bridges feature Geneva-brush polish. The movement offers about 40-hour power reserve.
The novelty Regulateur has an advantageous peculiarity if compared to all other Cronoswiss Regulators produced earlier - its bezel features the Superluminova markings providing great visibility. If the watch's owner turns the bezel, the timepiece will perform simple chronographic functions - it is necessary to position the marker across from the minute-hand and then it will be possible to see how much time has passed since the moment of setting.
The dial of the timepiece catches attention due to fine guilloche pattern. The hours are displayed in a separate counter with elegant Roman numerals in the upper half of the dial, while the seconds are featured in the counter in the lower half. The counters are embellished with their own guilloche. The minutes hand travels around the scale at the edge of the dial in conventional manner.
The original massive turnip-shaped crown catches attention in particular.
The Grand Regulateur Chronometre is available in platinum version in a limited edition of 99 pieces. There is also a variety of white gold, rose gold, gold and steel models.
The one-sided non-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial and the screw-on case back. The case is 30 m water-resistant.
The Cronoswiss Grand Regulateur Chronometre is presented with Louisiana-crocodile strap that goes with folding clasp or metal bracelet. The timepiece has become a worthy successor of the preceding Cronoswiss Regulateur models, having remained devoted to the brand's traditions yet corresponding to the latest standards of horology.
Tag Heuer's Innovative Creation Wins Prestigious AwardWed, 31 January 2007 TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 360 LS Concept Chronograph (LS standing for Linear second) has won the longed for iF product design award for 2007. The chronograph reflects the evolution process of the 1/100th of a second chronograph technology. The novelty model features a linear second counter distinguished by an absolutely new architecture based upon the remarkable timekeeping technology.
Design Award Winning
The winner has been voted for by the International Forum Design jury, one of the most prestigious panels worldwide. The jury is composed of the most experienced design experts coming from many countries of the world.
The iF award ceremony was initiated by the International Forum Design Hannover GMBH based in Hanover, Germany. Being introduced in 1953 , over time the award has become a superlative trademark to reflect the most innovative and avant-garde achievements in product design. The notable designs awards are related to a number of disciplines, including the horology field.
The Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 360 LS Concept Chronograph distinguished for being accurate to the 1/100th of a second, received the award in the Leisure/Lifestyle category. Among the timepiece's competitors there were more than 2,200 items presented by 35 countries.
It should be mentioned that Tag Heuer is the only watch producer that develops 1/10th, 1/100th, 1/1000th of a second at the same time in chronographs to be worn on the wrist. Being the leading producer of sports timepieces, Tag Heuer maintains continuous research process and introduces new Concept Watches. To give the precise definition of a Concept Watch, it is enough to say that it serves as a prototype uniting principal techniques and/or novelty designs.
In fact, it is the second time in the period of two years that a TAG Heuer timekeeping creation has been given the celebrated award. The Monaco Caliber followed the success of the brand's Professional Golf Watch that gained the iF Design Award for 2006, also in the Leisure/Lifestyle category. It is noteworthy that the award-winner was designed in close cooperation with Tiger Woods.
The iF Design Award is not the only victory recently achieved by Tag Heuer. In November, 2006 the Carrera Calibre 360 Limited Edition, featuring accuracy at the 1/100th of a second, won the coveted Grand Prix de l'Horlogerie de Geneve in the category Sports Watch. The both awards have once again strengthened Tag Heuer's prestigious status of the brand highly appreciated for creative avant-garde design decisions. The brand keep devoted to its well-known motto - 'Swiss Avant-Garde since 1860'.
Tag Heuer's Concept Chronograph
The matchless Monaco Calibre 360 LS Concept Chronograph was initially launched into the horology world at BaselWorld in April, 2006. The timepiece reflects the new step in the evolution of the brand's Calibre 360 chronograph movement. The mechanical movement, a genius mechanism, has become the first ever to enter the horology history as a timekeeping device that guarantees absolute precision of 1/100th of a second. The timepiece is also distinguished due to another world innovation - a Linear Second for the permanent second.
The idea of elaborating the Concept Chronograph has been suggested by the brand's ground-breaking Monaco V4 that caused a real sensation at BaselWorld-2004. The watch is equipped with V4 movement where a number of toothed drive belts replaced the pinions of the traditional movement. An automatic watch usually applies the oscillating weight for its winding. However, V4 movement features a linear oscillating weight moving along a track between the four spring barrels of the watch. The barrels are paired and united by a V-shaped bridge. A gear system employs a cog before transforming the linear movement into a rotating one. The rotating parts use not common synthetic rubies but ceramic roller bearings.
The Monaco Calibre 360 LS features a square-shaped case. The chronograph reveals thoroughly hand-finished engine bridges finished by hand. The unconventional dial offering supreme readability exposes the major peculiarities of the overall construction:
- a quite big-sized 1/100th of a second chronograph counter outer to the chronograph engine featured at 6 o'clock;
- an embedded in the engine 15-minute chronograph counter at 9 o'clock;
- an embedded 100-minute power reserve indicator placed at 12 o'clock;
- an embedded linear second indicator placed at 3 o'clock.
The Monaco Calibre 360 LS catches the eye with its distinctively contemporary look. The timepiece is housed in a perfectly faceted steel case characterized by refined polishing. The dial is presented under an arched sapphire crystal glass with facets linked to the case.
The watch is supplied with some other one-of-a-kind details. The chronograph push buttons are provided with protective sleeves. The black rubber strap with big folding buckle is integrated into the case. The case back featuring two square-shaped sapphire crystal windows reveals a magnificent view on the movement.
Everyone interested to see Tag Heuer's award-winning Monaco Calibre 360 LS Concept chronograph and lucky enough to find oneself not far away from the German city of Hanover, is invited to visit the iF design exhibition 2007 to take place in the period of March 15 - August, 2007.
At present day Tag Heuer is considered to be the most successful watch producer in transforming revolutionary horological ideas into the most accurate chronographs. The Monaco Calibre 360 LS is one more step in constant research and development work performed by the brand's specialists day after day.

Abracham-Louis Breguet and his Masterpieces
Abracham-Louis Breguet opened his first watch boutique in 1775 in Paris. With time his watches became popular among French high society representatives.

Since 1999 Breguet Watch Company belongs to Swatch Group that keeps to traditions declared by Abracham-Louis Breguet himself.
Jaeger-LeCoultre - Innovative Master Control TimepieceWed, 20 December 2006 Jaeger-LeCoultre, one of the most prestigious watch manufactures in the world, has marked the year 2006 by introduction of a unique creation - the first classically styled watch from Master Control line equipped with a tourbillon regulator.
The novelty Master Control timepiece is characterized by classic lines and ultimate precision provided by the tourbillon. The Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers, having accumulated excellent skills in watch designing and engineering, have conceived and given birth to one more innovative mechanism the complexity of which represented a real horological challenge.
The tourbillon regulator produced from titanium takes care of a self-winding movement -Caliber Jaeger-LeCoultre 978. The movement is manually crafted and decorated performing at 28,800 vibrations per hour and providing ultimate precision.
Aesthetically appealing dial of the new Master Tourbillon catches attention due to the tourbillon in work visible trough the circular aperture. The timepiece provides an additional advantageous feature — the display of a second timezone. The clear design of the Master Tourbillon allows a busy traveler to compare reference time with local time after just a single glance dropped at the dial. The upper part of the dial features a 24-hour subdial adorned with a nice motif defining the watch owner's reference or home time. The hour and minute hands indicating local or travel time are right in the center of the main dial. It is possible to reset the time in either direction - forwards or backwards.
However, the creative genius of the manufacture's watchmakers has not stopped at the mentioned accomplishments - the watch offers the new way of date indicating. The date is featured with the help of a patented device that is possible to be adjusted in both directions. There is the date scale at the edge of the dial -from 1 to 31 - the central arrow-like hand jumps from the 15th to the 16th day of every month not to break the view of the tourbillon turning cage.
The Master Tourbillon with 41.5 mm in diameter case offers the choice between traditional rose gold models, platinum (edition limited to 300 pieces) as well as steel ones. It is presented with matt alligator leather strap with a comfortable folding buckle in steel ,18K white gold or 18K pink gold or.
The precise and functional Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Tourbillon reaches top level of refinement and represents the most suitable timepiece for everyday wearing.
The Tourbillon Wonder
Jaeger-LeCoultre master watchmakers developed the tourbillon aiming to further increase the operational accuracy of the timepiece. The tourbillion is responsible for compensating for rate errors in upright positions. The complicated mechanism developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre corresponds to the highest standards of reliability, precision, and durability.
To understand better the innovative idea realized by Jaeger-LeCoultre, first it is necessary to remember the main principles the tourbillon work is based upon. The rotational movement of the tourbillon requires energy the amount of which depends upon the size of the tourbillon cage - the bigger is the cage, the more energy the tourbillon needs. As a common solution of economizing the energy, watchmakers make the size of the tourbillon cage and the balance smaller and reduce the movement frequency. However, this is not the best decision in regard of the accuracy of the mechanism. So, Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers took the challenge of coming up with another solution of providing the tourbillon with enough energy.
They decided to create an absolutely new balance of a rather generous size - the balance is meant to supply enough energy to the self-winding movement to maintain the cage's motion and work at the 28,800 vibrations per hour, thus offering high-precision of the mechanism. The newly elaborated balance appeared as the result of thorough research fulfilled in the manufacture's labs.
It is worth mentioning that the movement of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Tourbillon rewinds in just one direction. During the research it was concluded that a watch worn on the wrist rewinds two times faster when it rewinds in single direction if compared to a movement rewinding in dual-direction.
The technical perfection of the Master Tourbillon is further underlined by immaculate decoration of its movement. The tourbillon cage weighs just 0.28 g. the lightness of the titanium alloy it is produced from adds to the watch's precision.
Jaeger- LeCoultre watchmakers subjected every Master Tourbillon timepiece to rigorous 1000-hour testing. This is naturally a reliable way to guarantee the timekeeper's outstanding performance. The special tests were applied to the innovative tourbillon regulator to check it reliability and amplitude. The watchmakers made sure that the mechanism's perfect work was not any way affected when the watch was subjected to minor impacts and shocks. The watch provides 48-hour power reserve.
Samuels Jewelers in Search of New OpportunitiesSun, 10 December 2006 Samuels Jewelers, Inc., representing one of the major specialty fine jewelry retailers, currently carries negotiations with an India-based Diamond Trading Co. sightholder. The main point of the discussion is purchasing a majority ownership of the retailer by the sightholder. A sightholder refers to a company that enters the DTC as an authorized bulk purchaser of rough diamonds.

It is worth mentioning that DDJ Capital Management, LLC functions as a boutique investment manager. Saint Exupery's TimepieceWed, 06 December 2006 'If you want to build a ship don't herd people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.'
Antoine de Saint Exupery
The gorgeous limited edition of the IWC Pilot's chronograph was created as a commemoration to the French writer and pilot, to be more precise, the pioneer, Antoine de Saint Exupery. The history reveals that on July 31, year 1944, the Major (that is Exupery, who was a major of the French air force) took off from the United States airbase located on Corsica Island. He was going to have an investigation flight over the occupied part of France. Exupery didn't come back. A lot of legends have been created since then about Exupery, who is respected as a French national hero.
This year wasn't chosen by chance: Exupery's first novel called 'Night flight' was published seventy five years ago, that's why IWC Company chose the date of publication - year 1931 as the opportunity for a special limited edition of IWC's new mechanical Pilot's Chronograph. This collection is limited to 1,931 pieces which is the exact number corresponding to the year of novel publication. The IWC's new Pilot's Chronograph was designed to reveal the very essence of the romantic and daring writer-pilot, whose audacious nature always longed for freedom, creativity and adventures.
This watch features a tobacco colored dial to emphasize the very style of the pilots of that time. The entire design of the new IWC chronograph serves to render in color that sepia nuance we used to observe in early aviation movies. The rough hands of the pilot lay on the control column, with his fingers colored by tobacco smoke - this is the image that comes to the head while looking at the new Pilot's Chronograph.
In addition to the above mentioned, the IWC chronograph has got a protection against magnetic fields, as well as the automatic winding system. Another important feature is a cumulative time of the watch recording up to twelve hours. What's more, the back case of the watch got an engraving portraying the flying hero.
Some of Pilot's chronographs are going to be exhibited at the auction of the 'Vol de Nuit' association. These timepieces are not going to be for sale, for they are made of platinum.
Antoine de Saint Exupery
Antoine de Saint Exupery has left a legacy which is really worth exploring. He has become, of course unintentionally, the posthumous creative symbol for IWC Schaffhausen. That's also a tribute to the IWC Company, for the Company's support helped us keep in mind and be grateful for a great man and his passion.
Saint Exupery was an adventurer, because he was a person of the romantic mentality. The only limit for him was the limit of man's yearning and longing. Exupery's writing legacy sparked the imagination of coming generations. He was an air navigator, exploring the heights of the sky.
Antoine de Saint Exupery was born in 1900 to a family of French provincial noble man. He grew up in his family castle and got his education in France and Switzerland. He also studied architecture for a while at the Fine Arts School.
His first flying experience occurred in 1012. His life's defining moment took place when Antoine was twenty one, when he entered the French military service. He attended Strasbourg's flight school.
Exupery managed to publish his first story called 'Aviator' in 1926 in a French literary magazine. Not long afterwards he started flying mail delivery for a commercial firm Aeropostale. He flew mainly in the region of North Africa for several years and later in 1928, he became a manager of the remote airfield situated in the Sahara Desert. He was passionate about the desert and a year later Exupery wrote his first novel called 'Southern Mail', which was dedicated to the audacity of early pilots.
The second Exupery's novel was written after he moved to South America a year later. He worked there as a director of the company flying mail through Andes. His second novel 'Night flight' was based on the experience he got there. The novel's name 'Night flight' is explained by the perils which were considered necessary, elsewise the speed advantage of airmail delivery was lost during the night time to ships and trains. The pilots neglected warning to the mail speed delivery to get a commercial benefit.
In 1944 Saint Exupery made his last take off from the airport in Sardinia. Fifty six years passed from that moment when his plane was found in the Mediterranean Sea.
All the timepieces are like symbols. Being analog instruments, watches serve for symbolical displaying of time. However, timepieces also put up with craft, art and history. There is a new timepiece by IWC Company showing that history. This timepiece makes the legacy of the great adventurer and his great adventures to be a property of the people.
'It is in the compelling zest of high adventure and of victory, and in creative action, that man finds his supreme joys.'
Antoine de Saint Exupery
Breitling: Professional Approach towards Professional TimekeepingSun, 26 November 2006 What watchmaking brand would you first of all think of if you had to choose a timekeeping device for a pilot, or an amateur inspired by flying? Breitling, Instruments for Professionals, these words immediately come to mind.
Breitling is universally known as an indisputable leader in producing mechanical chronograph timekeepers. However, the company has also been quite successful in developing innovative electronic timepieces of utmost functionality.
Following the tremendous success of the Flying B, Breitling continues to provide professional pilots with the latest technological advancements. This time the Breitling Company has enriched its Professional line with the new Airwolf electronic chronograph offering a variety of useful functions. The professionals in the field of aviation will no doubt appreciate the Airwolf's supreme performance, efficiency and distinctive design.
The new Breitling's Airwolf chronograph is supplied with additional functions in the most logical, simple and direct way. Let us list the functions:
1.Alarm, 1/100th of a second chronograph with split and additional times
2.Countdown timer
3.second time-zone with independent alarm
4.UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) perpetual calendar.
The stainless steel case of the new Airwolf chronograph measures 43.5 mm in diameter. Protected by a glare-proofed sapphire crystal, the case and caseback provide water-resistance to 50 meters. Pay attention to the newly-designed chronograph pushpieces.
The watch's face reveals two big-sized LCD 12/24-hour analog and digital displays, applied "3" and "9" numerals and hour-markers. The supreme Airwolf's legibility is provided with oversized hands and display backlighting usually featured by the NVG - night vision goggles. The decoration of the dial has been created to remind a jet engine - a kind of Breitling's tribute to aeronautical vocation. The bidirectional rotating bezel (slide-rule) is pinion and guarantees optimally precise read-off.
The owners of the Airwolf chronograph should appreciate its precision and reliability as the timepiece is equipped with the COSC-chronometer-certified thermo-compensated SuperQuartz movement. Breitling's noteworthy priority is the fact that it represents the only major watch company which equips all models of its collection with COSC certified chronometer movements. Only 3 per cent of all Swiss watches correspond to the required high quality standards to be awarded with the official COSC chronometer certification.
The Airwolf's caseback catches attention due to a turbine-shaped relief - besides powerful aesthetic message, it offers the advantage for the alarm sounds. The original shape of the caseback serves as a resonance chamber for the audible indications. It represents a real wonder of micro-mechanical engineering technologies - altogether comprising 24 precisely cut blades, hand-assembled and then fusion-soldered.
The blue-dialed timepiece is available with a leather strap, while the black-dialed version - with a steel bracelet.
The Breitling Airwolf chronograph fascinates by the appealing union of eye-catching forms and useful functions, innovative technique and distinctive style, featuring sophisticated design of the dial and the perfect finishing of the fluted bezel. It is a great choice for prowess-and-performance lovers. It is a fine addition to the Breitling Professional line comprising high quality timepieces of the most distinctive styling.
The Return of the BrandMon, 20 November 2006 Ikepod is said to be returning. After having some financial problems, Ikepod has now found forces to overcome the difficulties and to rise again to satisfy the most refined tastes of watch connoisseurs.
Every company has bad times. This happens not always and it lasts differently, so that one company is able to withstand the difficulties of such periods, while other enterprises just disappear and if they are lucky, they will be remembered.
Ikepod seems not to be among the latter ones. Lately the company has encountered some financial problems, and in order to overcome those difficulties, they had to close the production. However, the company founded 11 years ago by Mark Newson and Oliver Ike has found new powers to restart production.
Some experts are of opinion that bad marketing and distribution strategies have led the company to that difficult situation they were recently. Older collections of Ikepod watches had an average price range of 2500 US dollars (2000 euro), whereas the prices of the new collections are still a matter of speculation.
As already mentioned, the Swiss watch brand Ikepod was established by an Australian successful designer Mark Newson and a Swiss businessman Oliver Ike in 1995. Mark Newson, however, started designing watches back in 1986, when he designed a mysterious watch called the Pod. The dial of that timepiece consisted of spinning disks and two dots, which substituted the hours and minutes hands.
Thus the name of the brand is composed of two words: Ike - Oliver Ike's last name and Pod - an earlier collection of watches from Mark Newson. The brand had gained success thanks to the retro design of the watches. In some cases this retro design turned into a really weird and strange look of the watch, which actually had its role in the popularity of these watches.
The first collection was called Seaslug, followed by Hemipode, Isopode and Megapode. All these watch collections were issued in limited editions, they consist of certified chronometers and they had always a chronograph watch. The names of the collections to come is still unknown so all we have to do is wait and expect something extraordinary from Mark Newson and his partner.

The perfectly round case has a rim, which leaves a trace of classicism and pocket watches. This roundness is 'spoiled' only by the winding crown on the side of the case.
Breguet replica watches would pass to someone, who considers himself to be conservative or who just likes everything old, but good.
Replica watches of classic design embody the timeless values and ever-praised quality. They are a necessary attribute of any lifestyle. These timepieces represent a perfect solution of a Christmas gift for him no matter what his age and occupation is.
A Complication and its FeaturesSun, 22 October 2006 The "headquarters" of all complications is Switzerland. Around 500 Swiss watch brands create various timepieces with different functions. Most expensive and exclusive timepieces are called complicated because their construction requires much more time and money than the usual mechanical timepieces.
A complication is a mechanism with many component parts which in their turn provide additional functions to the watch. Thus besides showing hours, minutes and seconds a watch can have such functions like: chiming, alarm, chronograph, annual or perpetual calendar, moon phase indicator and many more. Complicated watches are valued more than ordinary watches which is why they are more collectable.
Annual Calendar
The annual calendar represents one of the features of a complication. This one, however, is not very common among mechanical watches. The annual calendar automatically adjusts months with 30 and 31 days. Thus the day, month and 24 hours indicators, situated in an aperture of a watch, need to be corrected once a year, and namely from the end of February to March 1.
The first annual calendar was patented by Patek Philippe in 1996. The annual calendar can be considered as the middle between an ordinary and a perpetual calendar, which are more commonly used in a mechanical watch.
Perpetual Calendar

This calendar is commonly used in different complications. This feature comprises the specific aspects of the Gregorian calendar. The calendar is called "perpetual" because it automatically adjusts to months that have 30 days as well as to 28 or 29 days of February. Thus it is able to calculate the leap years. Inside the mechanism there is a mechanical memory the sequences of which are repeated very 48 months.
- Alarm, 1/100th of a second chronograph with split and additional times
- Countdown timer
- second time-zone with independent alarm
- UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) perpetual calendar.
The perpetual calendar, however, will need to be corrected in 2100 because of the quirk in the Gregorian calendar. The latter states that every fourth century is not a leap year. This gives the fine watchmakers quite a challenge in creating a complication. Today the technology of creating a perpetual calendar is known to watchmakers. Despite this fact every watchmaking company strives to create a different perpetual calendar.
They are perfecting the mechanisms and try to fit them in even smaller cases. Today complications have a wide range of perpetual calendar displays. There are some rare timepieces that include a calendar which is able to calculate this particularity of the Gregorian calendar. This feature is called "Secular Calendar".
Chronograph
Chronograph is another addition function that can be found in a complication watch. It allows the timepiece to act as a stopwatch. Thus the watch is able to start and stop timing a certain event. A chronograph may have different variations. Some chronographs operate with center seconds hand. They track the time on the main dial. Most commonly used chronographs use sub-dials to display the elapsed hours, minutes and seconds.
Depending on the chronograph the accuracy of a stopwatch function can vary from 1/5th to 1/100th of a second. There are chronographs that are able to track the time up to 24 hours. The timepieces that include a stopwatch function are themselves called "chronographs". The latter can be more complex and comprise specialized scales on the face and bezel of a watch. Such chronographs are able to determine speed or distance.

But for the first time the company creates a campaign around a single subject. The core of it is the top model Eva Herzigova. She highlights all the brand's products, whether jewelry, timepieces or necklaces. The beautiful model plays a unique role for each product from Chopard.
The 5 visuals developed for the Chopard advertising campaign are made with a brilliant imagination and fashion. The structure of the visuals is performed around 3 main ideas:
- the first is linked to the world of dreams, fashion and magic which the brand is made of; it is the place of everything prestigious and yet seductive and surely complicated which represents the main magic figure of the idea;
- the second idea refers to the strategy which is tightly linked with international communication; the latter is performed through the movies with the help of allusions taken from the "seventh art";
- the last idea refers to the flexibility of the illustration of universe because each product is designed in a special way that its visual is adopted taking into consideration the demands of every country; the idea is made for both medium and target audience.
The 2006 advertising campaign is created by an agency from Neuchatel called Inox Graphic Design. The pictures are made by Joel von Allmen. Generally the campaign, with its seductive and marvelous illustrations, focuses on the undiscovered secret and magic of a woman.
Looking at the pictures there can be outlined four elements that form the whole illustration. There are: the background with its brilliant effects; the core represented by Eva; the product of the brand and the signature of the advertising campaign represented through stardust. The magic that the latter creates adds mysterious features to the picture, also linking the main elements: the core and the product.
New Girard Perregaux Cat's EyeTue, 19 September 2006
Today Girard Perregaux is a highly appreciated brand. It is dated back to the 19th century when Constantin Girard married Marie Perregaux. Later in 1856 a watchmaking factory was built in La Chaux-de-Fonds where it can be seen today. Throughout its history the company introduced many innovations in the world of watchmaking proving its abilities to create complicated timepieces.
Girard Perregaux creates the highest quality timepieces that are seen today on the watch market. In upper level of watchmaking called Haute Horlogerie the brand is highly appreciated for the style of its watches. Nowadays the company has a status of a cultural symbol of the town in which the electronic and micro-mechanical as well as chemical and aerospace industries are highly developed - La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Recently the brand launched its next marvelous and exclusive timepiece called Cat's Eye. The latter is a watch line designed for ladies. The latest Cat's Eye model has a luxurious case covered in brilliants. The face of the watch is in mother-of-pearl combined with a precise movement that has so-called "small complications". The complications include a power reserve display and a moon phase indicator.
The new timepiece from the Cat's Eye collection has a black mother-of-pearl dial. At the top of the dial there is a moon phase indicator where the moon waxes and later wanes. The retrograde hand outlines the seconds and the week days. The date is displayed in the center window of the dial.
Having a seductive design which women simply cannot resist the timepiece is equipped with technical complexities performed with traditional Swiss standard of precision. The main characteristics of the watch include:
- a Calibre 11 ½Movement;
- a 28.800 Vibr./h (4 Hz) Frequency;
- 36 jewels;
- about 46 hours power reserve;
- sapphire crystals;
- the mechanism can bee seen through the case fastened with 4 screws;
- 30 meters water resistance.
The famous brand had its ups and downs but today it continues creating its own movements for the timepieces that will be highly appreciated by the watch fans for sure.
A master of elegance still amazes the public with its brilliant and exclusive timepiece which are not only luxurious having gems and diamonds but also include complicated mechanisms made with considerations to the highest standards of precision set by the Swiss watch manufacturers.
Paraphrasing the words of the brand's manager, a person does not need a Girard Perregaux watch to show off, the timepiece created by the famous brand refers mainly to the state of mind rather than a status symbol.
New Patek Philippe ModelsTue, 12 September 2006
The representatives of Patek Philippe announced that a marvelous collection of the brand will take place on September 20, 2006. The event will be held during an Antiquorum's auction of Important Collectors' Wristwatches, Pocket Watches and Clocks. On this auction the brand will represent its Patek Philippe ref. 5074 and Patek Philippe ref. 5970. The collectors will have a great opportunity to see all these exceptional models designed by the famous brand at New York's Grand Havana Room.
The first exceptional model that will be shown during the event is Patek Philippe ref. 5074. The watch is very rare. The watch is astronomic, minute-repeating and its movement is self-winding. The case of the watch is made of 18 carat yellow gold. The timepiece includes a perpetual calendar and indications of the leap year and moon phases. The starting point of the reference was given in 2002. That model was available only in yellow gold with a dial that was either silver or black.
Another version of this model was launched by Patek Philippe in 2005. The watch was made of pink gold and is considered as the follower of the well-known 3974. Both references have the same mechanism the only exception being the gong. The latter goes twice around the movement. This feature allows the gong to sound louder. The gong of this type is called "cathedral gong". The timepiece is estimated at 300,000 - 350,000 dollars.
The other model of Patek Philippe presented on the auction is ref. 5074. This reference will be offered at an auction for the first time. This watch is astronomic and it is also water-resistant. Exclusive Limited Series from Vacheron ConstantinMon, 04 September 2006 If anyone didn't know (which would be very alarming), Vacheron Constantin has extended its market all over the world. Singapore is no exception.
Particularly in Singapore on 24th of August took place an exclusive presentation of Vacheron Constantin's limited edition of watches. In an old bungalow, built almost 50 years ago during the British colonial times, there were not so many people gathered, among whom some 30 collectors, the CEO of Vacheron Constantin in Geneva, Juan-Carlos Torres, and the COO of Sincere Watch Limited from Singapore, Ong Ban, and other guests.
So, the reason for this glamour gathering was the presentation of two watches in limited edition: Vacheron Constantin Black Nickel Tourbillon and the Platinum Series. It was of course a great event for the watch collectors, as it is an honor to be among the lucky ones to be invited on such a small presentation.
There were also three model ladies invited to beautify the almost men-only gathering and help the watchmaker show the new series of watches. This made of course great pleasure both for the ladies to be among the first in the world to wear one of the most expensive watches and for the men gathered there, to witness this show.
This event has also hosted a birthday anniversary of the General Manager of Vacheron Singapore and S.E. Asia Mr. David Heng, who had to listen to the Happy Birthday song, sang by his colleagues and friends.
IWC Watches - Moving Towards the SkiesSun, 27 August 2006 Introduction
The IWC Company is famous for having been producing professional watches for pilots and fans of aviation since the middle of 1930-s. The pilot's watches present one of the most successful IWC watch lines.
The very first IWC pilot's watch entered the world of watch-making in 1936. There is a strong possibility that the brand's watchmakers were inspired by Junkers Ju 52. This aircraft was believed to have initiated the safe passenger flights and its dashboard served as the basis of the IWC's pilot's watches' dial style that over time has become a real classic. Consequently, IWC called its traditional line of pilot's timepieces - Classic.
There is no doubt that the IWC Big Pilot's Watch initially produced in 1940 happens to be the most brutal yet romantic pilot's watch created by the brand for military observers and navigators. You would agree that the line of pilot's watches wonderfully reflects IWC's philosophy - restrained mechanics and functionality gave birth to simple, clear and 100 percent masculine design.
Pilot's Watches in 2006
In 2006 IWC added a new stream into its Classic Collection, having remained faithful to the tradition of developing watches specially for pilots.
The Classic Collection has comprised a range of five models. Every timepiece features restrained image and provides supreme legibility, as well as great functionality. Let us list the models of the 2006 IWC Classic collection. First of all there comes the Big Pilot's Watch powered by the largest automatic movement in the world - Caliber 51110. It is followed by the Chrono-Automatic, the Double Chronograph, the Mark XVI, as well as novel Midsize watch.
The Mark XVI is a derivative from Mark XV, a highly demanded watch the story of which is connected to World War II. The Pilot's Watch Mark XI embellished the wrists of Britain Military Air Force pilots. The real legend of watch-making, IWC Mark XV, has come through redesigning process and was logically renamed into Mark XVI. The design of the latest Mark version has come even closer to famous German pilot's watch design.
So, what has been changed about Mark XV? First of all, the brand's watchmakers have enlarged the watch's diameter by one millimeter - now it is 39 millimetres. This change added even more balance to the proportions of the timepiece. The dial features really functional design - the peculiarity that proves the fact that the Mark XVI represents a new step in the logical development of this famous IWC pilot's watch.
The Mark XVI is powered by 30110 caliber automatic movement that provides 42-hour power reserve. Besides pure timekeeping, the date function is performed. The Mark XVI is available with a matt black crocodile leather strap with a comfortable stainless steel buckle. However, the future watch owners may consider one more alternative - Mark XVI on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The special IWC bracelet system makes the bracelet easily adjustable to the wearer's wrist.
One more important detail - the convex sapphire crystal is protected by anti-reflective coating, the watch's accuracy will not be influenced by drop in air pressure. The timepiece is water-resistant up to 60 meters.
OMEGA Torino 2006 Collection Limited SeriesWed, 23 August 2006 The precise results of OMEGA's timepieces made the company the official timekeeper for Olympic Games for 21 times along the 20th century. The debut of the official timekeeper was the Olympic Games of 1932 that took place in Los Angeles. The historical role of OMEGA was renewed in 2006 when it became the official timekeeper for Olympic Games in Torino.
The return of OMEGA was celebrated with the presentation of OMEGA Torino 2006 Collection. This collection represents a series of 3 chronographs in Limited Edition. Each Torino 2006 Olympic Collection chronograph has the five colored rings that interlock and represent the symbol of all Olympic Games. This fact truly represents the return of OMEGA and its direct relationship to the Olympic Games. An application of nanotechnology helped OMEGA to create the five symbolic rings of the Olympic Games with high precision into the watch design. These rings form the counterbalance of the split-seconds or central seconds hand on all the Limited Edition chronographs.
Thus, celebrating the Torino 2006 Olympic Games, OMEGA returns to continuous innovation in watchkeeping. The Torino 2006 mark on the dial and by the five symbolic rings underline the role of OMEGA as the Timekeeper of Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games; the same refers to the "Official Timekeeper" - an inscription made on the case back. There's also a symbol of exclusivity on the case back that states: "Torino 2006 Limited Edition" followed by the number of the series on each timepiece.
Speedmaster Broad Arrow Co-Axial Rattrapante is the first from the Torino 2006 Olympic Collection. The counterbalance of the Rattrapante hand is formed by the five symbolic colored rings. The outlining feature of OMEGA as the Official Timekeeper is marked by the blue inscription at12 o'clock of "Torino 2006". The genuine Speedmasters is recalled by the luminous Broad Arrow which faces the dial. Both the facetted hour markers and the hands are blued. On the bezel there's a black tachometric scale engraved and a red pulsometric scale encompasses the silver dial. A rhodium color outlines the silver-edged counters and hour marker zone. There is also an inscription that states "Lap Timer" and it is below the 12-hour totalizer and the date window at 6 o'clock. The steel polished case of the Speedmaster is 100 meters water resistant and features a sapphire crystal.
Seamaster Aqua Terra Column-Wheel Chronograph is the second watch from the Limited Edition. It also features the five rings symbol on the counterbalance of the chronograph seconds hand. Like the first model it has a pulsometer scale in red and the inscriptions that mark the return of OMEGA. The OMEGA calibre 3301 self-winding chronometer-chronograph movement is the main aspect of the Torino 2006 Collection Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronograph. It has a 55 hour powered reserve and a column-wheel mechanism. The OMEGA calibre 3301 is considered to be one of the most prestigious chronograph movements. It is considered to be so thanks to the free sprung-balance without index. The long period of use is guaranteed.
Speedmaster Automatic is the third masterpiece that finishes the Limited Edition Torino 2006 Olympic Collection. This watch is elegant and it includes the same five rings representing the symbol of the Olympic Games. On the satin-brushed bezel a black tachometric scale is engraved. The rhodium plated are the central seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers and the hour markers. A high-performance winding system which ensures a forty hour power reserve is the main feature of OMEGA calibre 3220 self-winding chronograph caliber. The stylish elegance of caliber 3220 movement is reflected by the circular graining and gold-plated engravings as well as the luxurious finish of special waves.
The collectors of classic timepieces will surely appreciate this Omega watch collection.
Panerai Luminor GMT Arktos WatchWed, 16 August 2006 Panerai's Success
With Panerai watches you get distinctive Italian design, prestigious name, supreme reliability and become a real time-owner.
Panerai is universally famous for its large-sized sports timepieces - you will discover Panerai watches with 46 millimeters in diameter, yet they are really elegant. Panerai has been closely related to the Royal Italian navy, having produced timepieces exclusively for them. Present-day Panerai watches are still developed according to the highest military-quality standards and are equally suitable for any solemn occasion or just everyday activities.
Panerai watches' huge success is also explained by the priority to keep the direct contact with the customers - the brand's watchmakers develop special edition timepieces. You will easily tell Panerai watches apart from other timepieces by their luminescent big numbers, the detail that has been vital for commando divers who always require extreme visibility.
Panerai Luminor GMT Arktos Watch in the Arktos Expedition
Panerai presented its Luminor GMT Arktos Watch, equipped with an automatic mechanical Panerai OP VIII caliber movement, at the prestigious 2005 SIHH Geneva watch fair. The innovative timepiece received the COSC Chronometer Certificate.
How did the idea of the Luminor GMT Arktos watch appear? The watch's story is amazing. It is related to the name of Mike Horn, a prominent explorer who has completed several expeditions around the world and the noteworthy Arktos Expedition (2002-2004), sponsored by Panerai. The goal of the expedition was to cross the Arctic Polar Circle, chiefly on foot, the only sledge and some other equipment, including a Panerai watch.
What role did the Panerai watch play in the story? Initially Mike Horn made use of a stainless steel Panerai Luminor Amagnetic. The timepiece had a movement in a soft iron case that guaranteed anti-magnetic protection, and that was specially oiled to shield it from the extreme Arctic temperatures in the range of -70 to +15. During the rest of the expedition Mike Horn relied upon the Luminor GMT Arktos watch which was used by the traveler for the north-determination. Mike tested the Luminor watch's ability to stand extreme weather conditions and magnetic fields. If the temperature went down to - 70 C, the frozen electronic equipment did not function and the only well-working item was the Panerai watch.
How did the Luminor GMT Arktos watch help Mike Horn to determine the north? If the hour hand pointed at the sun, north was in the middle part between the hour hand and 12 o'clock mark. Applied with the 24-hour dial, the Luminor GMT watch turned the north-determination into a really easy task. The 24-hour scale marked on the outer edge of the dial meant that there was no necessity to estimate the midway point - the additional 24-hour hand pointed to the sun and north was at 24.00.
Watch's Specifications
The Luminor GMT Arktos with 44 mm in diameter in stainless steel case is provided by a 42-hour power reserve. There is a date window at 3 o'clock position. The timepiece's water-resistance is up to 300 meters. On the case-back you will notice the engraving of the Arktos expedition's logo - the globe with the marked route passed by Mike Horn. The Luminor GMT Arktos features black dial with luminescent markers and Arabic numerals, small seconds positioned at 9 o'clock, and there is also the indication of the second time zone on the outer edge.

Tag Heuer Watches in Superman Returns (V) MovieSun, 16 July 2006
Action movie fans have been waiting for a new Superman movie for a good while. And, finally, Superman Returns (V), an American Superhero movie based on the fictional character and superhero Superman (Kal-El). The 185.000.000 USD budget Warner Brothers movie was directed by Bryan Singer and the role of Superman/Clark Kent was played by Brandon Routh (an American movie actor). The roles of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor were portrayed by Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey, correspondingly. The script was written by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty.
Filming started in February 2005 in Australia and the movie opened on June 28, 2006 in US movie theaters. The continuality set in Superman: The Movie served as its back-story, or as Singer says, a ''vague history''. Bryan Singer has incorporated unused footage of Marlon Brando's performance as Jor-El from material directed by Richard Donner for Superman: The Movie and the original version of Superman II. Moreover, pieces and motifs of John Williams' classic movie score for Superman: The Movie will be adapted by composer John Ottman and incorporated into the movie's new score. The movie got a PG-13 rating as expected for "some intense action violence."
One of the first shots of the movie is a close up of Kevin Spacey's wrist beautified with a Tag Heuer Monaco 69. Later, Kevin Spacey wears a Tag Heuer Autavia. The watch is unmistakably recognizable in the scene where he (Lex Luthor) shows his friends his model of a city.
Watch Worth Millions of DollarsWed, 12 July 2006 What thing would you pay millions of dollars for? In fact, I can't believe there is something in this world worth the fortune. I was naturally even more amazed to find out that this million-requiring item is possible to be placed at one's wrist. Who would dare put on a watch worth $9 million? Right, nobody! The treasury is kept at Vacheron Constantin's Geneva headquarters.
The out-of-this world diamond watch is called Kallista, meaning the most majestic in Greek. The world- renowned watch-making masterpiece was created for Vacheron Constantin by the designer Raymond Moretti in 1979. If you adore diamonds, this thing is just right for you - imagine 118 flawless emerald-cut diamonds united by one timepiece. The brilliance of Kallista weighing 2.2 pounds will make you blind but I'm sure you won't be able to take your eyes of it.
There naturally appears the question - why is the most expensive watch almost never seen on someone's wrist? Its owner, some Arab sheik, has delegated Vacheron Constantin to take care of Kallista, provide its safeness and proper performance. The sheik is not the only person who took the challenge of becoming the watch's owner - the diamond piece has changed hands time and again, still there is some mystery surrounding their personalities.
The owners of Vacheron Constantin watches prefer to remain in the shade, however some of them are quite well-known - Larry King and Charlie Sheen from the present-day heroes, but what will you say about the ones from the past? Napoleon Bonaparte, the Duke of Windsor and Harry Truman, Pope Pius XI, as well as numerous Egyptian kings and Arab sheiks entered the legendary list.
The Kallista watch provided the company's watchmakers with inspiration for creating a series of limited edition diamond timepieces formed into the Kalla collection which was launched in 1981. The models from the collection were crowned with such impressive titles like Queen Kalla, Regent Kalla and Earl Kalla, and surprising - the King Kalla. The 50 carats of diamonds were required to give birth to the timepiece. What do you think the price of the watch is? The King Kalla is also millions-worth - between $2 -3 million. The single-edition Lady Kalla was destined for Diana, Princess of Wales. It was a wedding gift carved from 18-carat white gold presented by some mysterious Arab sheik. The secret-watch comprised 108 emerald-cut flawless diamonds, with the dial embellished by 26 more diamonds. Somebody estimated the timepiece to be worth about $500,000, but I'm sure it will soon join the list of those millions-worth.
Well, probably you do not know how to spend your thousands or millions of dollars - an exclusive watch is a smart way out if you are courageous enough to wear a fortune on your wrist.
