Glashutte means the same to Germany as Geneva means to Switzerland – it is the heart of German watch and clock manufacturing industry. Since 1845, skillful watchmakers from Glashutte have created fine timepieces comparable in quality with those made by Swiss watch manufacturers. One of these watchmakers is Glashutte Original, which was then called Glashutte Uhrenbetriebe. The company had a hard time during the war and the Communist era, but managed to emerge from bankruptcy in 1994. Six years later, the watchmaking house became so successful that it was bought by the Swatch Group.
